A Morning Walk Turned Gunfight: How a Chicago Concealed Carrier Interrupted a Carjacking
On the morning of April 8, 2025, a quiet street in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood was shattered by a burst of gunfire—an eruption of violence that began with an attempted carjacking and ended with a wounded concealed carry license holder and two suspects on the run.

Where this incident took place
It Began with a Routine Morning
David Villalobos, 66, stepped out for a morning walk with his dog like he had countless times before. A resident of the neighborhood and a licensed concealed carry holder, Villalobos had no idea he’d soon find himself in the middle of a dangerous confrontation.
At the same time, a driver—Victim #1—was sitting in their parked vehicle along West Cullerton Street.
The Carjackers Approach
Mr Villalobos says he saw someone tapping on a window of the parked car. “I thought it was a phone then I seen him sticking a gun to the guys head.” Mr Villalobos was stumbling into a carjacking. An armed and potentially violent situation. Another suspect stood nearby, acting as a lookout or backup.
It was a classic carjacking scenario—fast, threatening, and highly volatile.
Villalobos Intervenes
Walking his dog on the same side of the street, Villalobos witnessed the carjacking unfolding just ahead of him. One of the suspects, talking to Villalobos said, “Hey old man get the **** out of here.” The situation escalated quickly, as the next few seconds led the armed suspect to turn his weapon on Villalobos and fire the first shots.
In that moment, Villalobos said “I moved as fast as I could and I returned fire.” I presume that he was moving to cover as that would be natural in the situation and it appears the street was lined with cars providing plenty of cover options.

Not the best illustration ever to represent what happened but certainly it gives an idea
A Gunfight on a Quiet Street
Gunfire was exchanged. During the exchange, Villalobos was struck in the leg. Fortunately, the wound was superficial. He remained conscious and was able to call for help.

Looks like one of the suspects was armed with an AK Pistol of some sort… wait, that can’t be legal in Chicago. Someone should tell him. This image was pulled from a video caught on a cell phone of a neighbor.
Police indicated they retrieved “dozens” of shell casings from the street, so I would say this was a serious gunfight.
The suspects fled the scene in a Lexus sedan, believed to have been used in multiple recent crimes. Police later recovered the vehicle abandoned in the North Lawndale neighborhood.
Aftermath
Villalobos was transported to Stroger Hospital, where he was treated and released. According to law enforcement, he is expected to make a full recovery.
The suspects have not yet been apprehended, and the Chicago Police Department’s Area Three detectives are actively investigating.
A Citizen Defender
Though wounded, Villalobos’s quick action likely disrupted what could have become a much more dangerous encounter for the initial carjacking victim. His intervention, while costly, may have saved his life and the lives of others.
The incident highlights both the volatility of urban crime and the real-world decisions faced by armed citizens who choose to step in. In this case, a morning dog walk became an ambush one couldn’t have avoided.
